When you first enter into the wonderful world of RUST, you can find yourself dying, and dying, and dying. I will never forget my first experience in RUST. There I was buck-naked and holding a rock, when some dude wearing a potato sack for pants beat my face in with a rock. It was traumatizing. From what I have heard, many others have experiences like this. My hope is that this guide will save you from a humiliating death like mine.
Now, with your shiny new hatchet, mine enough wood to build a wooden shelter (50 pieces I believe). Once you have enough wood, find a good spot for a home. Here are some tips for a good location:
1.) Find somewhere alone (other players will happily kill you)
2.) Make sure that you shack can be easily hidden
3.) Have your location close to resources
If you have at least two of those three tips checked off, you can safely build you wooden shack there. Now that you have a home, you will want to spawn there if you die. You need to make a sleeping bag. To do that, you must kill animals. Hunting is simple. Sneak up on the animal of choice then club it to death. NOTE: do NOT try this on bears or wolves.
After you sleeping bag is placed in you abode, you want some light and food. You should have meat from killing an animal. All you need is a fire. Mine the required resources, then build a fireplace in your shack. To cook the meat, hold down “e” then click open. Now drag the meat from your inventory to the “cooking” spot. Throw in some wood and presto. You have yourself a meal, fire, and shelter. By this time night is probably close.
At night time, you must be careful. You can easily lose you sense of direction. I suggest staying with-in 200 feet of your home. During your first night, you should mine wood. As soon as you get 30 wood, build a wooden storage container. By doing that, you can store your goods so that you can explore with no worries in the morning. After you have a treasure chest, start mining wood some more. When you have enough, build yourself a wooden door. NOTE: wooden doors can be broken! Metal doors can’t (unless you use explosives of some sort). It does take a really really really long time to break a wooden door though (382 whacks to be exact).
By this time it should be dawn. Make sure that you valuables are in your home in your chest, because you are about to explore!
What you want to do, is look in the East and start walking in that general direction. While you are going, make mental notes of landmarks. Continue to walk around. The next step is very dirty. Find someones home. If you have the right eyes you can easily spot someone’s house. Once you have found one, walk around its perimeter, and look for an open window or hole. NOTE: in RUST, you can only open/close doors you have made. If you have found an opening wiggle your way inside and steal all the goods you can find.
Once you are loaded up with booty, head back to your house, and drop it off. Don’t worry if you didn’t find a house you could break into. Scouting is always handy.
1.) Don’t use torches at night time. They can be spotted miles away and give you away.
2.) If you find other players, don’t mock them or be rude. If you do, they may beat your face in.
3.) If you see players that look remotely more powerful than you, crouch and hide in a forest or rock "forest" then run away.
4.) When expanding your house, try to wait until you have all the needed resources, then build.
5.) Assume all other players are hostile
6.) Make sure to leave your door closed when you leave your house.
7.) Be careful: After you spawn at your sleeping bag, you have to wait a few mintes before you can spawn there again. (beds let you spawn instantly)
8.) If you find a rock pile or wood pile while adventureing, you should mine it. You always need basic resources.
9.) Rad Towns are dangerous, and should only be approached by at least intermediate players. If you navigate a rad town succesfully, the rewards can be GREAT.
10.) Food makes rads go away
11.) Pretty much consider uncooked meat poison it wil almost always kill you.
